Medical bills on your credit report
Medical bills are one of the most common surprises we see on credit reports. Know the rules before you pay anything or panic:
- Paid medical collections shouldn't appear. Since 2023, the three nationwide credit bureaus have said they don't include paid medical collection debt on credit reports.
- Medical collections under $500 also shouldn't appear under those same bureau policies.
- There's a waiting period. Under those policies, an unpaid medical collection shouldn't show up until it has been in collections for a year. That gives you time to work things out with your insurer or the provider.
- Ask for an itemized bill and check whether insurance was billed correctly. Billing and insurance mistakes are common, and fixing them at the source is often the fastest route.
If a medical collection on your report breaks these rules, or the amount or dates are wrong, that's something we can dispute for you. You can also dispute it yourself with the bureaus, for free. Bureau policies can change, and we'll tell you what applies when we review your file.
